This 58 bed addition is the first state licensed certified passive house project in the United States. It was honored as the best institutional passive house project in the US in 2015 by the Passive House Institute.
'Passive design' mostly just means the building operates with much smaller 'active' heating and cooling systems, designed to create a healthier, more comfortable building while reducing energy costs by eighty to ninety percent - in this case, saving our client over $120,000 a year in energy bills. It cut construction costs as well... because we don't need giant furnaces and air conditioners, we can afford to build a much better shell. Better air sealing, better insulation, better windows - a better building in every way.
