When our client advised us that "one is none - three is one" the intended understanding was that redundancies needed to be designed into all aspects of this project, such that there would be a minimum of three potential options for all critical sources and systems, such as water and power.   All this was far easier to achieve beginning with a high performance building design, which slashes energy demands and makes alternative and renewable systems easily viable. The design program stipulated a home appropriate both aesthetically and functionally for a rural, working homestead.  Simplicity, durability, and functionality were driving values
